At Keen Kiddies, we support children to understand their feelings, communicate their needs and build confidence in everyday moments. Through the Zones of Regulation, children are gently introduced to simple emotional language that helps them recognise how they feel and what they may need. Emotional wellbeing is not separate from learning. It is the foundation for it.
That is why we embed the Zones of Regulation into our daily routines, learning experiences and conversations.
The Zones of Regulation is a simple framework that helps children recognise their feelings, understand their bodies and learn safe ways to manage big emotions.
There are no bad zones. All feelings are valid. Children naturally move between zones throughout the day, and learning to notice those changes is an important life skill.
Feelings and energy levels are grouped into four easy to understand colours – Blue, Green, Yellow and Red.
When we feel tired, sad, sick or low in energy.
When we feel calm, happy, focused and ready to learn.
When we feel excited, silly, nervous or frustrated.
When we feel very angry, overwhelmed or out of control.
We believe consistency supports confidence. By using the same language every day, children develop a strong understanding of their emotions.
We also welcome conversations with families about how the Zones of Regulation can be supported at home, creating a connected approach between home and care.
When children can identify how they feel, they are better able to communicate their needs, build friendships and manage moments of frustration.
These skills also support focus, resilience and confidence in group learning environments. Over time, they become an important part of school readiness and long-term wellbeing.
At Keen Kiddies, we are committed to nurturing curious minds and confident hearts.
You will find the Zones of Regulation displayed throughout our rooms at Keen Kiddies, giving children regular opportunities to see, use and practise emotional language throughout the day.
